A MEMS Faraday Rotator for MEMS Polarization Controllers, MEMS Magneto- Optic Spatial Light Modulators and Other Enabled Technologies

Faraday rotators that employ the magneto-optic effect are ubiquitous across several optical device categories: including optical isolators, polarization controllers, and spatial light modulators. However, Faraday rotators are notoriously difficult to fabricate at small scales due to the high magnetic field strengths required to generate significant light polarization vector rotations. In this paper, we present a novel MEMS design for Faraday rotators including a tractable inductor fabrication procedure that can create significant Faraday rotations using a small sized device. Performance estimates in the form of analytical and numerical simulation results are presented along with concepts for polarization controller and spatial light modulator realization.
